Swapping the LCD itself? Again, not so much. Swapping the front board to change out the LCD? Sure, simple procedure, solves the problem of a bad LCD by gutting another (hopefully irreparable) system and leaves virtually all risk behind. Either way, there doesn't seem to be any sense in continuing this line of conversation, as you clearly won't concede (or can't grasp) my point that this particular procedure is actually pretty delicate, easily screwed up (permanently, in most cases) and shouldn't be presented as easy or as a first choice option to someone of unknown skill. You seem to either have a high enough level of skill to do such a transplant but no appreciation for the general populace's lack of soldering skill (frequently leading to ruined hardware or lots of delicate repairs done by someone with an appropriate level of skill to reverse the damage/issues caused by an inexperienced/unskilled attempt) or got so incredibly lucky when doing such a swap with nominal skills that you can't appreciate exactly how lucky you got. If it's a horizontal line, though? The new LCD is most likely going to be missing that line (or lines) permanently. If it's a vertical line, and it broke/disconnected at the bottom of the LCD, it can most likely be repaired. The ribbon cables on DMG screens are notorious for being incredibly delicate and commonly having wires for the vertical or horizontal lines break during such transplants. Unless OP already has some existing soldering skills (and some fairly decent skills at that), chances are that they'll end up with a newly nonfunctional Game Boy due to something going awry when trying to transplant the good screen into the system with the bad LCD. Pulling the LCD from a DMG Game Boy and transplanting it into another (successfully, mind you) isn't. are legitimately simple, regardless of experience. You obviously have a much higher opinion of the average person's soldering skills than is reflected in reality. So maybe the soldering part isn't exactly run of the mill easy but its not overly difficult either.

If the OP still actively plays his gameboy why not upgrade that bad mama jamma with a backlit kit which are super easy to find online. Find an old game boy that no longer works but has an intact screen.

Are you under duress? Is someone holding you against your will? If you cannot answer with a yes please give me a signal so that proper authorities can be contacted.

I can find plenty of sources for the front lens, various mod kids (LED, bivert, etc.), pre-modded systems, but absolutely zero replacement LCDs.Īre you going to be okay? Since you're the "expert" here, where is your source of easy to obtain replacement LCDs? Unless you're just gutting other DMGs and yanking the whole front board (which is quite different from the delicate operation of replacing the LCD itself), I'm extraordinarily curious as to your source for easy to find, cheap replacement LCDs for the DMG Game Boy. Sure, there are folks who probably have the level of skill, steadiness and patience to do such a swap without having any issues or worry. on either of the LCD ribbons, so for you to suggest it's super simple to find a replacement and then swap it out is just flat out wrong. Professionals with years of experience have a nightmare of a time getting those LCDs out without having something break/burn/tear/etc. Obviously, if you're suggesting that DMG LCDs are cheap and easy to come by and are super duper easy for any Joe with any level of soldering iron experience to swap out. Having recently cleaned and refurbished an original gameboy I clearly have no idea what I'm talking about. For other Game Boy models, sure, there are some that are pretty simple. Uhh.no? Did you not notice that OP specifically mentioned it being a DMG Game Boy? There aren't any third party LCDs available for them, and per multiple sources, they're pretty incredibly difficult to remove and replace without destroying some part of either of the ribbons attached to them. Replacing the screen is a pretty simple task.
